Speech Therapy

An initial and thorough assessment of the child’s communication skills. Using a combination of formal and informal assessment methods, we obtain an understanding of expressive language, receptive language, speech production and social communication skills.  This preliminary evaluation is the foundation of our team’s highly individualized recommendations. It is additionally the groundwork for the development of our therapy plans. The length of the assessment will vary as it is dependant on the needs of the child.

Our therapy sessions are tailored to meet not only the needs of the child but also the family.  No two sessions are exactly alike. Typically lasting 30-minutes, the Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) generally provides therapy sessions on a weekly basis, although we are flexible with scheduling when necessary.

Our individual therapy sessions may involve direct work with the child targeting their goals, but they may also include training for family members/caregivers. Supporting the child’s needs outside of the therapy room can be challenging, which is why caregivers are always supported. We incorporate play and movement to ensure that all clients are motivated and successful.

Our Communicative Disorders Assistant (CDA) provides direct therapy under the supervision of a Speech Language Pathologist (SLP).  The CDA executes the therapy plan that is developed in tandem by the SLP and the caregiver following the initial assessment.  Sessions are typically 30-minutes in length with the option of 45-minute and 60-minute sessions if appropriate for the child.  Sessions are often provided on a weekly basis, although we are flexible with scheduling when necessary.

Individual therapy sessions with a CDA may involve direct work with the child targeting their goals, or it may include caregiver training. Understanding how to support the child’s needs outside of the therapy room can be challenging , that’s why we include it in our therapy programs. Therapy sessions are always tailored to meet the needs of the individual child, with no two sessions being the same.  We prioritize play and movement to ensure that all clients are motivated and successful.

Assessment

Initial assessment includes a parent interview where we will discuss the child’s developmental history, strengths and potential areas for intervention. The child’s current functioning may also be assessed using both formal and informal measures.  Based on this information, both the Occupational Therapist (OT) and the caregiver will collaboratively set goals and develop a therapy plan. The duration of the assessment will vary based on the needs of the child.

Sessions are typically 30-minutes in length, with the option of 45-minute and 60-minute sessions if appropriate for the child.  Sessions are often provided on a weekly basis, although we are flexible with scheduling when necessary.

Music Therapy

Assessment

During the assessment sessions, our Music Therapist (MT) observes the child’s cognitive, communicative, emotional, musical, physical and social skills.  Once the assessment is complete, the MT then shares and discusses areas of strength and areas of need that could be targeted through a Music Therapy program.  A therapy plan is then developed in collaboration with caregivers and other therapists involved in the child’s care such as Speech Language Pathologists or Occupational Therapists. The length of the assessment session will vary depending on the needs of the child.

  • Families and caregivers are the primary support for children outside the therapy room. That's why we prioritize helping them develop a greater understanding of their child and how to support their development. Working to Increase their knowledge base, helping them to trust their instincts about their child,  and also helping them to gain new skills to keep their child’s progress moving at whatever rate that might be is important to us.

“We don’t strictly adhere to a specific program, instead we take pieces of what we each have in our toolbox and tailor programs to meet the needs of each child.  We are all neurodivergent affirming, so we ensure that all of the therapy that we provide adheres to this mindset.  We like to say that we honour all of the ways that our clients learn, communicate and play.”
